Overhaul the Voting System

Apparently, the voting system in Florida isn't the only one that needs overhauling. American Idol could really use a tweak.

I was thinking about limiting the number of times people could vote, but that too is easily manipulated, because people have access to too many lines, and the truly "devoted" will always find a way...

Our reader Christine put forth this idea:

I Truely feel that they need to change the Judging and voting, I think what they should do is that the bottom 3 that are picked by fans should on the vote off show have to sing for the judges again, then the judges pick the contestant they feel should go home.

So.. we vote, then the bottom 3 duke it out in front of the judges on elimination night, and the judges choose.

Or... as Elisabeth Hasselbeck just suggested on The View, make the people put their money where their dialing fingers are, and have downloads available for sale - whoever sells the most wins. Since dialing is one thing, but actually reaching into your pocket is something else entirely.

Or... To go 1 step further with Christine's thought, how about the public chooses the bottom 2, the judges get to choose the 3rd, and the live audience get to pick from those 3 on little keypads from their seats?

What are your thoughts?? Something's gotta change. Seriously.

i really like the idea of the judges picking from the bottom 3, but sanjaya wasnt even in the bottom 3 this week, which is completely ridiculous. i was so hoping though that it was going to be haley leaving when i saw her up there, its ridiculous that shes still there.

Does anyone else remember William Hung???? He made quite the chunk of change with his "vocal ability" and he wasn't even in the final 10,000????(possibly more) I usually like people in the top 12 that don't win over the actual winners with the exception of Kelly Clarkson. (Sorry Caro.....still don't like anything about Twitchy Ticks except the harmonica...he can only do one style and his cd gives Pickles indigestion and me nightmares!) I'm hoping Melinda will win, but let's not forget.....sooooooo many people vote for the ones they think will not be as safe as the obvious favorite, due to a bad performance.....remember Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry? I honestly don't know what would be the best way to correct the voting process....I'm still liking the judges kicking someone off from the bottom 3 each week....the audience vote is too "Star Search".

I think that the judges should have more say in who should go because America definitely doesn't get it sometimes. And I agree with Goldie on liking the people in the top 12 better than the winner. That's true for me except I love Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. You don't hear much about Ruben and Fantasia that's for sure.

Ok, no that's not gonna work...those ideas... people can get around the limited voting and he wasn't even in the bottom 3 for the judges to kick him off...but, if the judges get to pick one (unanimously) to kick off and the studio audience gets to vote during the results show...that could work...but I don't see them changing it this late in the competion

Ok...I know how to solve the voting issue!!! First, I agree with with letting the public vote as many times as they please. Take their bottom two. Let the judges pick the third...and... are you ready for this.....I get to pick who goes home!

I am so disgusted with this season of Idol! I am so tired of hearing the name Sanjaya on every news channel or radio station. There is actually a girl here in Houston on a hunger strike until he is voted off! LMAO!

SPREAD THIS!!!
post it in bulletins, put it on your page, and comment others with this!
lets make it clear..SANJAYA NEEDS TO LEAVE!!

The only effective way to get Sanjaya out is FOR EVERYONE to vote ten times for every other person EXCEPT for Sanjaya.

This would help the ones with fewer votes to gain on Sanjaya.

The first sign that this is working would be to have Sanjaya in the bottom three.

Doing this EVERY week until he is out.

The odds are that with fewer other singers the greater the odds of Sanjaya leaving.

Try it...it's the only way to get Sanjaya out!

In the current voting system. If you want to REALLY vote someone out for sure...you have to vote for everyone else an equal number of times.

Why? Because if everyone votes for their own favorite then the "POPULAR" vote is split.

Let's say the singers other than Sanjaya each get 6% to 14% of the vote.

14%
13%
12%
11%
10%
9%
8%
7%
6%

That would leave Sanjaya with 10% of the vote...he's not in the bottom three. He might have otherwise gotten 6% of the vote and have been out. "That +4%" saved him from being in the bottom three.

"That shock jock" can make a difference of +4%

This is with 9 singers VS. Sanjaya as WILL BE WITH NEXT WEEK'S VOTING.

This past week when Chris S. was eliminated it was Sanjaya VS. 10 Singers...so you would think the % was less than +4% and in each week coming up the % will increase...SO DON'T GIVE UP ON AMERICAN IDOL...JUST VOTE FOR EVERYONE EXCEPT Sanjaya

If you want to make a difference vote for everyone else 10 times next week...and then with your remaining time vote for your favorite more!

This is the only way to get Sanjaya out!

Don't let anyone else try and tell you differently.

Keep it up until EVERYONE does it. If everyone voted 10x for everyone except Sanjaya we would see him leave.

Let's break down 16 million votes... On average that's 1.6 million per idol.

Probably closer to 600,000 for the one leaving and 2.2 million+ for the one with the most.

IF PEOPLE Vote for the entire two hours without a break they can vote 100 or maybe 200 times (or more) by phone.

Text voting can yield 500 votes or more if voting the whole two hours.

Now let's just say the average is 100 votes per person. Many people only do vote a few times and many people vote for the whole two hours.

To get 1,000,000 votes...that means 10,000 people need to vote 100 times each.

600,000 votes...means 6,000 people need to vote 100 times each.

So the difference is 4,000 people @ 100 votes each

That's 4,000 people...the shock jock only needs 4,000 people to vote 100x each to make a difference.

...and if they vote 200x each then he only needs 2,000 people to do that.

Using the text numbers of voting 500x each person, they only need 800 people to do that.
